Matthew Barnes
Matthew is our senior advanced sports therapist and personal trainer. Matthew began his career at the Barnes Sports Clinic aged seventeen and has since gained nearly a decade of experience in treating sports related injuries and providing premium quality personal training. He gained his qualifications with Premier Training International and is a member of both REPS and the Society of Sports Therapists.
Matt is also an associate member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and often works closely with the clinic's Chartered Physiotherapists in dealing with all manner of physical injuries both in and outside the realm of sport. Indeed, it is this extensive experience within the wider scope of general physiotherapy that has helped to make Matthew a more accomplished personal trainer.
As well as specialising in and treating sporting injuries Matthew has participated in many different sports in order to better understand the mindsets and experiences of the athletes that come to see him for treatment. Some of the sports Matthew has taken part in include rugby, soccer, tennis, clay shooting, fencing, judo, and amateur boxing. As a therapist Matt has covered Core level rugby matches for the Army.
Matthew often partakes in running. In 2009 Matt raised over £1000 for two Royal Marines charities by running the Bath half marathon whilst wearing a 40lb weighted vest. Matthew also enjoys horse riding and polo. He has also received advanced swimming coaching.
Matthew has in the past trained with the Royal Marines Reserves and more recently spent two months and over 300 hours of training and conditioning in Phuket, Thailand in the art of Muay Thai kickboxing. Additionally he holds a master grade in the Chinese martial art of Wing Chun. So as well as personal training, Matt can offer one to one coaching in Muay Thai kickboxing and can instruct and grade Wing Chun up to black belt level.
